Carney’s “new CEO type” moves:
- Dropping the Carbon tax
- Ending the EV sales mandate
- Dropped the idea of a capital gains tax increase
- Dropped the Digital Services Tax
- A more serious PMO and Mark Carney’s suits
- “Decide, then do” approach, top down
Why things have stayed the same
- MPO has not built anything new
- Alberta MOU is still largely an idea, has not netted a project, separatism on the rise
- No trade deal with the US -> pivot into “lowest tariff rate”
- Our own best customer has not happened
- Parliament has sat for a small amount of time and passed few pieces of legislation
- Domestic issues have largely taken a backseat as Carney travels the world
- Most of the reported ‘trade deals’ are not actually trade deals, more like future understandings
The things that drew media attention:
- Elbows Up
- Cold technocratic ‘competence’ vs Trudeau’s virtue signaling ‘idealism’
- Carney positioning Canada to work more closely with China and India
- The banding together of “middle powers”
- The selling of the idea, mainly to media, and Trump deranged voters that the old world order is broken/gone
- Big tent party, the possibility of a majority through floor crossings (portrayed positively as collaborative rather than backroom dealing)
- The illusion of progress (pivots to next section)
Things that are still problems:
- Public safety
- Immigration (they say population growth has stalled but will people actually go home?)
- Foreign interference (China/India now bff)
- Inflation (especially food, highest in G7 as of Feb 2026)
- Housing affordability
- Stagnant economy, low productivity, rising unemployment
- Indigenous relations and land claims are on the rise, opposition to energy projects will follow
Quote of the Week
Carney only wears dark bespoke suits, white shirts and conservative ties. His socks are as classic and understated as Don Draper’s. Brown shoes are out. Black ones are in. He exudes competence and purpose.
